"Wivenhoe Villa believed to be the work of colonial architect John Verge was built for Sir Charles and Lady Eliza Cowper in 1838 and named after Lady Eliza'a home in England.

History tells us that on 2 July 1848 George Cox of Mulgoa and Mudgee obtained 1,000 Hermitage cuttings from Charles Cowper's vineyard thus indicating that a vineyard had been well established at Wivenhoe by this date. In 1849 German vine-dresser Johannes Justus came to work for Charles Cowper.

The Sisters of the Good Samaritan came to Wivenhoe in 1910 to start an Orphanage which operated until 1957. In 1957 Mater Dei Special School for the intellectually disabled began.

The present vineyard was replanted on 14 August 1998 and a small quantity of Chardonnay wine resulted in the year 2001 - Centenary of Federation Vintage.

I believe this vineyard has its own unique character that has impressed me and I believe it will continue to produce excellent fruit with the enthusiasm of Kevin Lawler and others and, of course, the overall help of our heavenly father.

All I can say is, plant more please!"

Mater Dei Chardonnay is an outstanding example of the variety and shows the excellence of the soil, temperate climate of the area and the good management of the vineyard.
